seeing the Witch Vibe And Fashion stuff on tumblr is kinda weird for me as a jewish witch b/c like. idk the whole european concept of witches is 100% antisemitic caricatures of jewish women and the witches wearing black thing comes from jews being legally required to wear black in the middle ages to identify us as subhuman (we now have Religious Reasons for orthodox folks wearing all black but as anyone familiar w/ judaism and the history of antisemitism would know there are a lot of instances of us being forced to do a thing then incorporating it into religious law) idk eventually i want to make a big fancy post about this with sources but just be aware where the shit you’re doing comes from i guess. not saying it’s Appropriative to dress Witchy (altho there is a lot of like. appropriation involved in the white witchcraft community. ngl) but when i see posts from the (white) witch and neopagan community like “man witches get such a bad rap in media!!” it’s like.. no… jewish people do
ok since i first made this post it’s actually gotten notes kind of, which is impressive for a post about antisemitism which is… chronically ignored… but the thing is like a shitload of white nonjewish witches and neopagans have reblogged it and put it their Witch Tags and been like “yeah it’s not bad!! just know where it comes from!!” and i’m here to tell y’all actually it is bad to try and emulate an aesthetic that’s literally a racial caricature that is still being used to demonize jewish women to this day (look at the mother gothel character in the tangled movie for just one f*cking example of many). it’s not /Culturally/ appropriative because actually being a witch doesn’t have much to do with being jewish but i do actually feel it’s appropriative for y’all to act like the pointy hat, all black clothes, cackling on a broomstick thing represents you because this idea was invented to oppress and vilify jews, and is bad at its core. now that you as non-jews know where it comes from you should /want/ to remove it from your practice and your lifestyle. don’t just reblog psa posts about antisemitism, actually work to combat it.
